Sky rested her arms on the roof of Kate’s car and gave her girlfriend an unamused look. “Kate, I love you, but you barely drove halfway down the street. I can’t always be the designated gay driver.”
Kate continued smiling as widely as possible. “And I love you too! I thought I could do it but you’re just such a better driver.” She quickly turned her smile into a pout and leaned her head on her elbow. “Besides, every relationship needs to be equally balanced with the gay driver and the gay passenger.”
“You make it sound as if I’m an expensive date,” Sky sniffed, placing her own elbows on the bar as well. “Besides, we’d split the bill, duh,” she reached out and poked Kate’s forehead. “Anyway, it’s fine. You’ll be out in time for us to grab dinner at least, right?”
“I’m only joking, love. I know we would.” Kate cooed, scrunching up her face as Sky poked her forehead. She reached out with one hand and pushed a baby hair back into place in Sky’s hair and let out a snort of disbelief. “One hundred and ten percent. As soon as shift change happens, we’re out of here and on our way to food at…. wherever you take me because I have no idea.”
Edward hummed in agreement, then picked up his glass of water. “To hydration”, he monotoned before lifting it and bringing it to his lips. “Yeah, I still wanna play. I might do a bit more covers this time around, though. Everything I’ve been writing lately has a slower tempo. Don’t think that’ll do well with a Friday crowd,” Edward said. “Will you be working?”
She leaned on the counter of the bar and tapped her fingers to her cheek, humming at her brother’s suggestion. “Yeah, I’ll be on. Friday tips are one of the reasons I live my life of luxury. Covers are always awesome though. People love to sing along to talented singers who play songs they actually know. But it’s weird to hear you say everything is slower. Something up, Bub?”
“I don’t know why either,” Sky pouted as she swiveled back and forth on the bar stool. “We could’ve gone to the beach. Or we could’ve grabbed breakfast! Or brunch! Ugh, our possibilities today were endless, babe. You should just quit.”
Kate placed her elbows on the bar and rested her chin on her hands, her own pout developing on her face. “And that all sounds wonderful and amazing. You, plus pancakes and homefries? Heaven on earth. But, if I just up and quit how am I going to afford to take my girlfriend out to brunch?”
“If someone does come in, at least they’ll be drinking from the cleanest glass in LA,” Edward said as he smiled at his sister. “Anyway, I would totally order something, but this is the only bar in LA where I can’t use my y’know,” he looked around the empty room before dramatically mouthing “fake.”
Kate snorted before putting the glass down and returning her brother’s smile. She let out a sigh as she watched yet another person walk right past the windows of the bar. “Well, I wouldn’t want people drinking out of dirty glasses now, would I? And that’s just an unfortunate circumstance in exchange for a nice place to perform.” Kate replied, refilling her brother’s glass of water. “You still want to play Friday night right? Rick was asking again.”
“Don’t know why I thought taking a morning shift was a good idea. There’s no one here and yet the sun is shining and I’m stuck inside.” Kate sighed, cleaning the same glass for the tenth time that day.
